What a week of football. From cold, rainy mid-week matches to a weekend of glorious sunshine and games on our home pitches.
It has been months since some of our teams have been able to play at home due to waterlogged pitches. This has been the wettest season that any of us can remember and it has played havoc with our fixtures, with many reversals and postponements. This has left us with a huge backlog of league matches to get played by the end of the season for some teams.
For example, our U12s haven’t been able to play at home since October and have suffered weeks of postponements and disappointment. So, it was fabulous to see them back out there and playing again. Last week they played four matches!
On Wednesday they showed true grit and determination in turning up at a match with the bare bones of a team to play a very strong opponent. They worked hard and went from underdogs to victors by the end of the match.
On Friday they played again, this time losing the match but still displaying all the most important Colts’ values - resilience, perseverance and commitment. It was just a joy to see the kids out there playing again and loving football.
On Sunday they played again! This time, a doubleheader - so their third and fourth match of the week. It was a fabulous day up at Chailey common with the sun shining and the U10s playing their last match of their season at home as well.
The caff in the clubhouse was open (expertly run by our treasurer, John), the atmosphere was buzzing with spectators chatting and enjoying the sunshine, there were fabulous displays of sportsmanship all round … and most importantly the kids were actually playing football at our home ground! What more could we ask for?!
