Newick Christmas Tree Festival

This weekend’s football fixtures may have been a washout but one of our managers has been busy creating this year’s entry for the Newick Christmas Tree Festival and it looks amazing.

The week-long Christmas Tree Festival is held at St. Mary’s Church in Newick. It is an annual event held in aid of both St Mary's and St Peter & St James Hospice.

Every year the church is filled with Christmas tree exhibits provided by various local clubs, societies and small businesses.

This year’s Colts entry, created by Jon Tivey on behalf of the club, is a moving creation based on the theme ‘when war stopped for football’. It is a celebration of the Christmas truce during WW1 when soldiers came out from their trenches to play football on Christmas Day 1914.

It is a beautifully crafted emotional piece that seems particularly poignant at the moment in light of current world affairs. It also symbolises what grassroots football means for the Colts - a way to bridge divides and unite players despite differences in background, culture, gender or religion.

It is well worth a visit to the church to view all the entries and to read the fantastic messages from some of our players that Jon collated in the style of a roll of honour. Each player wrote a sentence about “what football means to me”.

The festival started on Sunday 3rd December and runs until next Sunday (10th December). Trees can be viewed daily between 10am and 6pm and entry is free. Refreshments are available for a donation when viewing the trees at the weekend.

On Saturday 9th December there will also be a festive market at St. Mary’s from 11am to 2pm, with stalls both inside and outside (weather permitting). The Rector will be cooking sausages, bacon and onions, as he does each year, and there will be a variety of stalls and hot and cold food, plus drinks to enjoy.
