From underdogs to victors

There is something wholesome about going from underdog to victor in any situation in life but in football it’s particularly sweet.

Today wasn’t the first time our U13s team has headed into an important match as the underdog and come out the victor. They don’t carry the reputation of being the strongest team - they win some, they lose some and they’re OK with that. They embrace our club ethos that grassroots football is first and foremost about having fun. It’s about learning how to play in a team, how to treat your teammates, coaches and referees with respect, and how to deal with disappointment alongside success.

But when faced with a formidable opponent, such as today, they always show up and battle hard. Yet again their unbreakable spirit got them a result that no one expected ... especially their opponents.

Today our team played some of the best football they have ever played. They ignored the elements and played with grit, determination, flair and a calm composure beyond their years. They kept battling until the very end.

The lesson that could be learned by all today is that, firstly, you should never underestimate your opponent and secondly, that accepting defeat with grace is just as important as winning.

As the underdogs, our U13s absolutely rose to the occasion. The team is now through to the third round of the MSYFL Cup, in which they will no doubt face another strong team from a higher division. But if they turn up again as they did today, there is hope of another David and Goliath moment.

Whatever the next outcome, we are all beyond proud of this team. Well done Colts U13s.

And they weren’t the only team to face the rain and the wind today. Well done to all our Colts for getting out there and getting the job done. In fact, well done to all the kids everywhere who strap up their boots week in and week out and pour their hearts into the game they love.
