Congratulations to our U9s (soon to be U10s) team for their recent win at the Stone Cross Royal Tournament.
We entered two teams into the tournament - CNC Lions U9s and CNC Tigers U9s - and both teams displayed incredible passion, determination and team work on a scorching hot day. They navigated the group stage with grit, earning themselves well-deserved spots in the Shield quarter-final knockout phase by finishing a respectable 3rd place in Group B and Group D.
In an unusual twist of fate, our Lions and Tigers found themselves facing each other in the quarter-finals. While this brought a strange and bittersweet feeling for players, coaches and supporters alike, the game was a thrilling encounter that showcased the competitive edge and mutual respect that make grassroots football so special.
In the end, the Tigers clinched a nail-biting 3–2 victory in a match that could have gone either way. Every player left their heart on the pitch, displaying skill and tenacity with every pass, tackle and shot. But what stood out above all was the sportsmanship at the final whistle with both sets of players coming together in a heartfelt huddle, applauding each other's efforts and embracing the spirit of our Colts squad.
Moments like these remind us that beyond wins and losses, it's the bond between teammates and the character they show that defines success.
Onto the semi-final and the Tigers battled bravely in another close encounter against a well organised Lewes U9 team. There was some incredible defending and a never give up attitude which saw the game on a knife edge finishing 0-0 and having to go to a penalty shootout!
This was a new experience for both the team and their coaches, who were proud of how their young players dealt with the pressure. Penalties can feel like somewhat of a lottery but there had to be one winner and the Tigers showed confidence and composure with their penalties sealing their place in the final.
The final saw the Tigers take on a talented Bexhill United side. With everything to play for, the Tigers delivered their best performance yet. It was disciplined, courageous and inspired. A 2–0 victory saw them crowned Shield champions! The goals were a result of sheer willpower and the clean sheet was earned with solid defending and resolute teamwork from back to front. Well done Colts Tigers!
The U9s manager, Adil Gilani, said of the tournament:
“Today wasn’t just about the results, it was about the journey that both our teams endured and achieved. The Colts U9s played with a unified hunger to win and a deep desire to create memories that will last a lifetime. Their celebrations were full of joy, but also pride and humility knowing they have achieved something special together.”
